Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain bonded to your natural teeth. They cover up minor imperfections, ensuring your smile appears attractive and pearly white.

Some people get one veneer to correct a chipped or stained tooth, while others get between six and eight to achieve a more balanced smile.

Following an in-office appointment and a discussion of your goals, the team can develop a treatment plan using veneers that aligns with your needs.

What types of issues can veneers correct?

At Dlight Dental, the team uses veneers to correct various imperfections, including:

  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Unusually shaped or pointy teeth
  • Stains that won’t respond to whitening treatment

Veneers can also close visible spaces between your teeth.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Dlight Dental, getting veneers takes two appointments:

First appointment

During your first appointment, the team conducts an oral exam and asks what you like and don’t like about your smile. If you have healthy teeth and gums, they administer a local anesthetic and prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of the enamel.

After preparing your teeth, the team takes digital impressions. They send your digital impressions to a laboratory that uses them to design a custom set of porcelain veneers.

Second appointment

Once the laboratory completes your veneers, you return to Dlight Dental. The team administers a local anesthetic, lines up the veneers with your teeth, and bonds them in place. Your provider polishes the veneers, removes any excess material, and provides you with care instructions.

Will veneers last forever?

Veneers last between 12-15 years on average, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan by taking preventive measures. The team at Dlight Dental recommends brushing and flossing daily and avoiding bad habits like chewing on ice or opening objects with your teeth.

If you play contact sports like lacrosse or rugby, or you mountain bike or skateboard, you might also want to wear a mouthguard. These plastic appliances can significantly lower the risk of chips, fractures, or other damage.
