Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax too much during sleep and block the passage of air. Our treatments open up the airway so you can breathe easily and get uninterrupted sleep.

Gentle, Comfortable and Effective Alternatives to CPAP

Traditionally, sleep apnea has been treated using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. The CPAP streams air in through the nose or nose and mouth via a mask. The problem is that many patients who use CPAP complain that the mask is uncomfortable to wear and that the machine is too loud. Around 50% of patients end up not using their CPAP as a result, rendering the treatment useless.

We provide laser treatment and oral appliance therapy, used separately or in combination, as alternatives to the CPAP. When you come in with your sleep study and/or referral from a medical doctor, we’ll do an oral examination to determine what solution will work best for you.

The CPAP is the most commonly prescribed sleep apnea device, but many users find it cumbersome and uncomfortable to use.

Laser Treatment

Our Fotona LightWalker® laser allows us to improve the quality of your sleep. The laser stimulates a tightening of your throat muscles to open up your airway. The laser is gentle and has a high success rate of producing positive results in sleep patterns. The results can last up to a year, and the treatment can be repeated. With no device that needs to be worn, many patients find this a comfortable and very satisfying solution.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliances are small, mouthguard-like devices that fit over your teeth while you sleep. The device shifts your lower jaw slightly forward to keep your airway open through the night. There are no hoses, masks or loud machines involved, making oral appliances much easier to transport and more comfortable to wear than a CPAP.

To ensure your oral appliance will meet your needs, we will take digital impressions of your teeth and send the impressions to a laboratory that will create your custom mouthpiece. When the lab completes your appliance, you will visit our office to try it on. The doctor will make any needed adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit.
